Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi urged US President Donald Trump to intervene to stop the Iran war, warning that a prolonged conflict could push oil above $200 a barrel.
He made the appeal Monday at the Egypt Energy Show 2026 in Cairo.
“I tell President Trump: nobody can stop the war in our region in the Gulf but you,” Sisi said, adding: “Please, Mr. President, please. Please help us stop the war. You are capable of doing so.”
Oil and supply shocks loom
Sisi said the conflict could trigger “twin shocks” of supply shortages and higher prices that have yet to fully hit markets.
He warned that attacks on energy facilities, including production sites and refineries, could have “very serious repercussions” for the global economy and fuel prices.
Market watchers had warned the price of a barrel of oil could reach more than $200, and this is not an exaggeration.
Fertilizer risks add pressure
Sisi also warned that disruptions to fertilizer exports could ripple through global food markets.
He said richer nations might absorb higher costs, but middle-income and fragile economies could face a “very, very severe impact” on stability.
Gulf leaders condemn attacks
Earlier at the event, Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi condemned Iranian attacks on energy infrastructure and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, calling for stronger protection of maritime corridors.
The strait previously carried about a fifth of global oil supplies, making any disruption a major threat to energy markets.
GCC member states Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain have all faced drone and missile attacks.
Cairo pushes diplomacy
Egypt has condemned attacks on Gulf Arab states and has sought diplomatic ways to avoid a wider war, Reuters reported.
Sisi also credited Trump with helping end the war in Gaza, saying only the US president could stop that conflict before a ceasefire was signed in Sharm el-Sheikh in November.
The appeal highlights growing alarm over energy security and food inflation as the Gulf conflict escalates.
With shipping lanes under strain and energy infrastructure at risk, regional leaders are pressing for urgent diplomacy to contain the fallout.
